SPORTS OUTREACH
Our sports activities are an extention of Sports Outreach Malawi (SOM), existing with a vision of reaching out to children and the youth using sports with an aim of transforming their spiritual, social, physical and psychological lives. We use sports as a tool to mobilize people with an aim of disseminating social transforming messages.
SOM was established in 2001 by Kyle Ray, a missionary from USA. He had a vision of specialized sports oriented programs targeting athletes, churches, schools, prisons, orphanages, and other groups.
SOM objectives:
1. Support churches, children organizations and other like-minded organizations with sports ministry material, expertise, and equipment so that they can effectively serve athletes and communities and be able to effectively use sports to support their programs.
2. Reaching out to upcoming athletes with transforming messages to help them become disciplined sports men and role models that children would look up to.
3. Train people, Churches and organizations how to use sports to reach out to children and youths with transforming messages and develop their sports skills
How we do it
1. We operate a resource centre stocked with sports ministry information and equipment accessible to interested individuals and organizations
2. We source sports ministry information and sports equipment to give or lend out to our partners or those in need for them to use for their sports programs
3. We adapt the language and content of the available sports information for easy consumption of the locals.
4. We are consultants on sports ministry in Malawi
5. We host visiting sports teams from outside the country
6. We send sports teams to areas outside our impact areas to reach out to children and the youth.
7. We organize sports clinics, tournaments, and mini Olympics and other sports events
8. We organize and run sports workshops and seminars
As of now, we are operating in the cities of Lilongwe and Blantyre. One of the outstanding activities that we are doing is the prison ministry, where we have leagues running in two of the major prisons in Malawi: Maula (Lilongwe) and Chichiri (Blantyre).
